What is White Fungus Infection?

 At a time when country is seeing the sudden urge in Black Fungus cases, we are now witnessing an another fungal infection which is named as White Fungus (Tremella Fuciformis). White fungus, also known as candidiasis, is a serious fungal infection. It is widespread, especially in the tropics, where it can be found on the dead, attached or recently fallen branches of broad-leaved trees. It belonged to parasitic family of Hypoxylon Species. The species are mainly tropical and sub-tropical, but extends itself to the temperate areas in Asia and North America, also known in Central and South America, the Caribbean parts of North America, sub-Saharan Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands.

As the cases of Covid are surging in India so are cases of Black Fungus in many states but now currently four cases has been reported in Patna,  Bihar of this white fungus.

 

According to the health experts the White Fungus is more dangerous than Black Fungus as it directly affects lungs as well as other parts of the body including nails, skin, stomach, kidney, brain. This is the reason why everyone is saying that Now for the third wave of Covid the children are at high risk.
 


Till now no death cases have been reported of White Fungus but yes we all need to be aware of this.



What causes white fungus?

People with low immunity strength when come in the contact with objects that contains these fungal mould spores are being affected with this. For instance, the medical equipments for Covid Patients like ventilators and oxygen support system if are not sanitized properly then there are the chances of this infection.
Further, overuse of Steroids and usage of tap water in humidifier attached to an oxygen cylinder can also increase the risk of contact of white fungus.


Who can get infected by white fungus?

Candida can normally live inside the body without causing any problem. However, patients having low immunity like the one suffering from Covid disease are particularly at the high risk of this fungal infection.
PEOPLE HAVING HIGH RISK OF THIS INFECTION THOSE WHO:-
  • have spent a lot of time in ICU
  • have weakened immune system
  • have recently had surgery, especially multiple abdominal surgeries
  • have received a lot of antibiotics or steroids in the hospital
  • receive total parenteral nutrition
  • have kidney failure or have hemodialysis
  • have diabetes
  • have a central venous Cather
White fungus is non contagious in most of the cases, as it cannot be spread directly from person to person. Its symptoms are kind of similar to Corona disease only. 


How can white fungus be treated?

According to The Health Ministry of India, all the patients infected with white fungal infection must be examined carefully, perhaps with the intention of knowing the extent of their infection.

After detection of white fungus, antifungal medications are very much helpful in treating the patients and it led to a lot of improvement in their conditions.

The type and dose of antifungal medicines will depend on patient's age, immune status, location and severity of the infection.
